We are the official St. Louis chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild (STLMQG), which was founded July 20, 2010, by Kristy Daum. The guild was born out of a desire to connect with other quilters and sewists from around the area who have an interest in the modern aesthetic.

We are a unique guild in that we strive to present "All Things Modern, All The Time." Regardless of whether you are an experienced quilter or just bought your first few yards of fabric, we hope that you will find our guild inspiring, educational, fun, and entertaining.

St Louis Modern Quilt Guild On QuiltingHub

What is Modern Quilting?

In our opinion, the best definition of modern quilting can be found on the Modern Quilt Guild's (MQG) site, part of which is below, although we encourage you to visit the MQG's site for the full experience.

"Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. 'Modern traditionalism' or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting."

    The St. Louis MQG announces

    An Evening with Carolina Oneto

Hello, I am Carolina. I’m the mother of three wonderful children, two girls and one boy, and wife of a wonderful and loving husband, whom I have loved for 25 years. I was born in Chile in the picturesque village of Valparaíso, where I had a beautiful childhood alongside my dear parents and my siblings.

Even though it isn’t related at all to what I do today, I am an Industrial civil engineer. I worked for 5 years in logistics and when my first daughter was born, I changed to teaching, a job that let me spend more time with my daughter and, later on, with my son, too. For five years, I taught engineering students in the same university that formed me.

After five years of teaching, because of my husband’s work, we left Santiago and moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In Buenos Aires, I had the incredible opportunity of learning patchwork with Teresita Leal and Cecilia Koppman, known Argentinian quilters. Every week I had classes to learn the innumerable and varied quilting techniques.

I have always liked constantly learning and perfecting myself and, in this new activity in my life, I keep on doing it. That is why every February I travel to the United States to the Festival of Modern Quilting «Quiltcon» where I go to different classes, workshops and talks with known international quilters. This allows me to constantly create new ideas and techniques, and to see and be able to take quilting towards a more modern and actual place. I also studied «Color Interaction» with Professor and artist Eduardo Vilches in the Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile.

In 2015 we went back to Santiago where, for 4 years, I worked in my own studio, and with Janome, I have been creating and constantly giving new workshops to promote quilting in Chile.

My quilts have been exhibited in many Quilt Festivals around the world, such as Quilt Week (Paducah, Lancaster, Des Moines, Daytona Beach, Grand Rapids, Virginia Beach), Quiltcon, Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, European Carrefour do Patchwork, Fiberart International, Festival do Patchwork Gramado and Floripa Quilt Festival (both in Brazil). Additionally, my work has been featured at art centers and galleries in Europe, USA and Chile.

I love to teach online quilting and design classes, and I also create many on demand classes for those who need to learn at their own pace and time. Online classes allow me to connect with students from many different countries, which is a very enriching experience.

I currently live in São Paulo, Brazil, where I have my own studio, from where I am continuously creating and developing my art and teaching that WE ARE ALL CREATIVE.

    Watercolor Quilt

In this workshop I’m going to teach my process to create a “Watercolor Quilt”. First we start learning about Color Theory, the chromatic circle and the 3 variables of color. I will guide you throughout the process of choosing fabrics, to create a beautiful transition with colors (like when we paint with watercolors!) I will teach you the process, step by step, to create a “watercolor quilt”. You can be sure that this complete course will provide you with new techniques and color theory knowledge that will allows you to feel confident designing, cutting and sewing in an improvisational way, but with some rules to create beautiful movement in your quilts.

    Curves and Transparencies

In this workshop the participants will make a mini quilt top, where we will design it from scratch. Then we will talk about Color Theory and how we can create a Transparency effect with color and fabrics. I will teach you how to cut fabrics with complex shapes and to join these curved shapes by machine.
