Join us for a workshop taught by Tia Curtis of Tia Curtis Quilts.

Are you ready to set your artist free with improv piecing? If you are, then join Tia Curtis for an Improv Piecing workshop. She will instruct how to make 8 different traditional blocks in a liberated, pattern free method and she will show various ways to combine the blocks to incorporate modern and whimsical borders. You will leave the class with an imagination filled with possibilities and at least 8 finished quilt blocks and the start to some borders.  All the pieces can go together to make a wall hanging or you can add to it to make a larger quilt.

The room will be open at 8:30 am. The workshop will start at 9:00 and end by 4:00 pm with an hour for lunch.

Supply list for Improv Piecing

  • About 1.5 yards of a neutral fabric for the background of your blocks. I used a bunch of different greys, but it would look really good with white as well

  • Fat Quarter stack of pretty fabric or a Brown Grocery bag filled with your favorite scraps.

  • Sewing machine with quarter inch foot

  • Cotton thread

  • Fabric scissors

  • Small thread snips

  • Paper scissors

  • Sharp rotary cutter

  • Cutting mat

  • Rulers (6x24 and 1x12 are my favorite)

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • A sketchbook or notebook

  • Pencil

  • $5 for class handout

*It will be helpful if you cut some fabric before class. Please bring these pieces already cut to speed class along.

  • 28 background squares cut to 3.5 inches

  • 12 strips of color/print fabric cut 1.5 X 22 inches

  • 12 strips of fabric cut in 22 inches by varying widths (from 1.5 inches to 3 inches)

  • You will still need about 1 yard of background fabric and some scraps to work with in addition to the above cuttings.
