Off the Beaten Path Piecing with Improv Mountains

Set off fearlessly with Kitty as she teaches you how to piece an improv mountain range wall hanging, full of adventurous skill building. In sewing the unique and nestled mountains, you will learn how to piece gentle improv curves, precise thin strips, and how to think through the order of operations when piecing more complex blocks. Kitty will demonstrate how to put partial seams to use, and where some pre-planning can set you up for success with off the beaten path designs. Playing with both color gradients and creative piecing methods, you will leave with more confidence to dive into improvisationally pieced quilt construction, ready to head off the grid and embrace the adventure!

Because the scheduled workshop for April had to be canceled, the board has decided to go ahead with a regular monthly meeting. However, because of the speaker we've scheduled this month, the meeting will be held over Zoom.

    Please help us welcome -

Sarah Ruiz - Region 2 Representative, The Modern Quilt Guild

Sarah Ruiz is a quilter and aerospace engineer from Houston, TX. Her creative and technical sides have always been intertwined, from drawing Disney characters and memorizing constellations as a kid to taking humans back to the moon and dreaming up new quilts today. Quilting perfectly combines her engineering and artistic mindsets, and she loves the puzzle-solving required to turn an idea into reality. Her quilts feature bright colors, bold lines, and graphic shapes that are easy to make but pack a visual punch. Her work has been displayed at QuiltCon and the International Quilt Festival, and published in Curated Quilts and QuiltCon magazines.

She is going to be speaking about her role at the MGQ and try to answer all our questions about the organization.

    From Watercolor to Quilt:

Using Negative Space to Map the Melody

Delve into the layers of your creativity with this fun exploration of moving from watercolor painting to applique quilt. Beginning with a group painting session, Kitty will guide students through the process of translating a unique watercolor painting into mini quilt form using fusible raw edge applique. With very clear guidance every step of the way, a special focus and reflection on how the use of negative space helps make these quilts sing, and particular attention to color gradients and flow, students will delight in the creative doors that are opened through learning this technique. No prior painting experience necessary, and some samples will be available for the trepid painters among us.

    The St. Louis MQG announces

    An Evening with Carolina Oneto

Hello, I am Carolina. I’m the mother of three wonderful children, two girls and one boy, and wife of a wonderful and loving husband, whom I have loved for 25 years. I was born in Chile in the picturesque village of Valparaíso, where I had a beautiful childhood alongside my dear parents and my siblings.

Even though it isn’t related at all to what I do today, I am an Industrial civil engineer. I worked for 5 years in logistics and when my first daughter was born, I changed to teaching, a job that let me spend more time with my daughter and, later on, with my son, too. For five years, I taught engineering students in the same university that formed me.

After five years of teaching, because of my husband’s work, we left Santiago and moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In Buenos Aires, I had the incredible opportunity of learning patchwork with Teresita Leal and Cecilia Koppman, known Argentinian quilters. Every week I had classes to learn the innumerable and varied quilting techniques.

I have always liked constantly learning and perfecting myself and, in this new activity in my life, I keep on doing it. That is why every February I travel to the United States to the Festival of Modern Quilting «Quiltcon» where I go to different classes, workshops and talks with known international quilters. This allows me to constantly create new ideas and techniques, and to see and be able to take quilting towards a more modern and actual place. I also studied «Color Interaction» with Professor and artist Eduardo Vilches in the Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile.

In 2015 we went back to Santiago where, for 4 years, I worked in my own studio, and with Janome, I have been creating and constantly giving new workshops to promote quilting in Chile.

My quilts have been exhibited in many Quilt Festivals around the world, such as Quilt Week (Paducah, Lancaster, Des Moines, Daytona Beach, Grand Rapids, Virginia Beach), Quiltcon, Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, European Carrefour do Patchwork, Fiberart International, Festival do Patchwork Gramado and Floripa Quilt Festival (both in Brazil). Additionally, my work has been featured at art centers and galleries in Europe, USA and Chile.

I love to teach online quilting and design classes, and I also create many on demand classes for those who need to learn at their own pace and time. Online classes allow me to connect with students from many different countries, which is a very enriching experience.

I currently live in São Paulo, Brazil, where I have my own studio, from where I am continuously creating and developing my art and teaching that WE ARE ALL CREATIVE.

    Watercolor Quilt

In this workshop I’m going to teach my process to create a “Watercolor Quilt”. First we start learning about Color Theory, the chromatic circle and the 3 variables of color. I will guide you throughout the process of choosing fabrics, to create a beautiful transition with colors (like when we paint with watercolors!) I will teach you the process, step by step, to create a “watercolor quilt”. You can be sure that this complete course will provide you with new techniques and color theory knowledge that will allows you to feel confident designing, cutting and sewing in an improvisational way, but with some rules to create beautiful movement in your quilts.

Cancellation and Payment Policy - Cancellation requests must be made in writing to stlmqg@gmail.com. A full refund will be issued to requests made  4 weeks prior to the event. A 50% refund will be issued to requests made between 2 and 4 weeks prior to the event. No refund will be issued to cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to the event.
